With 75 years of expertise in the filtration business the German filter manufacturer MANN+HUMMEL is the leading global specialist in that industry. Together with them we designed an end-consumer application for the new product line of air quality monitoring and purification devices for indoor and in-car usage which translates their expertise in filtration technology into the world of smart living.

One centrepiece of the OurAir ecosystem is the community feature which enables users to monitor the outdoor and indoor air quality surrounding their friends and family in real-time. While the data for the indoor quality is delivered by the OurAir devices the outdoor air quality information is generated by an API using a machine learning algorithm which can predict the air quality at any GPS location in city block-level accuracy, by gathering data from government sensors and combining it with wind, weather, traffic dynamics and satellite information.

As MANN+HUMMEL opened up their Internet of Things Lab Singapore just in October 2016 and their new product line was not fully shaped yet, our help was not only needed from a pure design perspective but also in establishing the digital innovation process within the lab itself. That means beside my usual role of proposing concepts, creating numerous prototypes and designs with the team, ensuring that hardware limitations are matched and managing client expectations my focus this time was heavily on introducing and establishing a general design process with the client.

As the OurAir ecosystem is growing into a multi-platform service (including a web portal for facility managers) with numerous technical dependencies it was crucial that our concepts and designs were flexible enough to adapt to constantly changing hardware and back-end limitations. Therefore, to avoid jeopardising the project progress the challenge for me was to enable the team to work on meaningful tasks towards the right design direction. That means in this case working within a modular design approach in close collaboration with the engineering team.
